Avaaz is a civic organization that promotes global activism around issues like human rights, climate change, poverty, conflict, corruption and animal rights. Launched in 2007, the organization is the largest and most powerful global online activist network. The organizations Res Publica and MoveOn.org founded Avaaz.org with support from founding partner the Service Employees International Union.
MoveOn.org‘s Ricken Patel is the executive director and founding president of Avaaz.org. Other board members include Eli Pariser, board chairman, Tom Pravada, secretary and Ben Brandzel, treasurer. David Madden, Tom Perriello, Jeremy Heimans and Andrea Woodhouse are also co-founders.
The name Avaaz was chosen for the progressive NGO because it means ‘voice’ or ‘song’ in Persian. Plus, most other Indo-European languages also have similar sounding words with related meanings. The word ‘voice’ in English is also related to Avaaz and more information click here.
The goal of Avaaz is to unite international practical idealists and help them work together to create a better world. The organization does that by supporting progressive causes like uniting to take action on climate change, building international support for refugees and taking other positive, progressive, actions and learn more about Avaaz.
Using its members in over 30 countries, Avaaz organizes global campaigns like email-your-leader, online public petitions, rallies, sit-ins, phone-ins, as well a media friendly stunts to raise awareness of global problems. Its tens of thousands of members suggest different ideas for consciousness-raising campaigns. Initially, Avaaz accepted support from foundations to fund its staff and start-up costs. Since 2009, the activities of Avaaz are funded by donations from its members. The organization doesn’t accept donations from foundations and corporations. Avaaz also doesn’t accept payments of over $5,000.
